Projects
Screeningprogrammet
The screening programme is our first instance of investigating the occurrence of new types of pollutants. The results are used to assess the need for new regulations and whether the investigated substance should be included in the other monitoring programmes.
SeaBee
Norsk infrastruktur for dronebasert forskning, kartlegging og overvåking i kystsonen. Innovasjon innen dronebasert forskning.
Seaweed Carbon Solutions (JIP)
NIVA leads the task “Monitoring and assessing environmental interactions”, and will evaluate the ecosystem effects of large-scale offshore seaweed farming.
SERPIC
Increasing water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges worldwide. The reuse of the effluents of wastewater treatment plants constitutes a significant and constantly available water resource that can be used for purposes such as irrigation. However, municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants face an increasing amount of emerging pollutants.
SINOPLAST II
SINOPLAST II shall contribute to reduced plastic waste and marine litter originating from China. The project partners shall achieve this through establishing a whole life-cycle framework for plastics for policy makers, improving the capacity for integrated land-ocean management of plastics, and through improving the knowledge of plastics from a global perspective. The project will thus support the implementation of the new global plastics treaty.
SIREN
SIREN (Integrated system for simultaneous recovery of energy, organics and nutrients and generation of valuable products from municipal wastewater) will develop a system that recovers energy, organics and nutrients from municipal wastewater while simultaneously generating valuable products.
SMARTLAGOON
SmartLagoon (Innovative modelling approaches for predicting Socio-environMentAl evolution in highly anthRopized coasTal LAGOONs) is about understanding the interrelationships of socio-economic activities and environmental degradation and vice versa for the case of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon in Spain.
Sogn Hagelab
A living lab for blue green solutions in Sogn allotment garden.
SOS-Water
The SOS-Water project, initiated in October 2022 and funded by the EU, aims at addressing the increasing pressure on global freshwater resources by defining a “safe operating space” (SOS) for water resources, considering environmental, social, and economic dimensions, while co-creating objectives and indicators integrated into hydrological models.
SPARE: Space for resilience - How do we plan for stormwater, biodiversity and recreation to increase urban resilience?
In SPARE we research how cities can increase their resilience by better planning for and implementation of more blue-green infrastructure to handle stormwater, foster biodiversity and increase public health by providing natural outdoor opportunities for recreation.
SPHERTOX
SPHERTOX is an independent ground-breaking project for young research talents (FRIPRO) funded by the Research Council of Norway.
SURFER
Surface waters: The overlooked factor in the forestry climate mitigation debate (SURFER)
SusWater
SusWater (Sustainable governance of river basins with Hydropower production) focuses on water management in regulated rivers. The project looks at various avenues towards a more unified water management that is accepted both locally and nationally, while international obligations are met.
The potential of offshore wind farms to spread marine alien species: A Norwegian case study and review of current evidence
NIVA have conducted a literature review to summarise the risks of alien marine species being spread by offshore wind activities.
The River Monitoring Program
The purpose of the river monitoring program is to calculate inputs of nutrients and pollutants to Norwegian marine areas through monitoring of rivers and modeling of inputs from areas without monitoring.
UPRISE
UPRISE produced a holistic management tool for municipalities that can be used to identify the most appropriate areas for peatland restoration.
USAGE
Water Column Monitoring
As part of the monitoring of the water column along the west coast of Norway, NIVA investigated the extent to which the artificial reefs adjacent to the offshore energy facilities affected the availability of food for three types of cod fish - saithe, ling and tusk.
