About the project
Hydropower is important, but it destroys the shoreline in reservoirs. REBIRTH is testing new solutions to preserve biodiversity in our reservoirs.
Hydropower is the most important renewable energy source in Norway, where over 1000 reservoirs store water. Their fluctuating water levels damage shoreline ecosystems, turning formerly biodiverse areas into “aquatic deserts.” This is concerning amid a global decline in freshwater biodiversity.
REBIRTH will design, construct, monitor and compare two types of innovative biodiversity refuges, to understand their effect on freshwater biodiversity, and to provide guidelines on how to design biodiversity refuges in the littoral of reservoirs.
REBIRTH will contribute to more nature-positive hydropower and reduced loss of freshwater biodiversity.
