Monitoring of Environmental Pollutants in Coastal Areas (MILKYS)
The program monitors levels, trends and effects of the most environmentally hazardous heavy metals and organic pollutants in marine organisms along the entire Norwegian coast, from the Oslofjord to the Varangerfjord, and in Svalbard.
Coastal Harmony
Coastal Harmony will investigate how land use planning, water management, and nature conservation work together to protect the coastal ecosystem—especially at a time when the aquaculture industry is growing rapidly. The project will assess how well current policies and management practices are coordinated, and identify obstacles that make it difficult to protect the coastal environment.
Laboratory for genetic analyses
Marine Nature Map
The project delivers a national, wall-to-wall map of NiN 3.0 main marine benthic ecosystem types for Norway’s coastal and marine area out to 1 nautical mile from the baseline, accompanied by probability/uncertainty maps. The workflow integrates remote sensing (drone, satellite, bathymetric LiDAR), niche modelling, and existing reference datasets.

Faster, cheaper and more humane method for evaluating new PFAS substances
A research group has developed a new method for assessing the risks posed by persistent organic pollutants.
JUST4CARE
The JUST4CARE project aims to transform climate adaptation practices by integrating principles of justice, equity, and resilience into urban and regional planning. Through inclusive and innovative approaches, the project addresses the specific needs of vulnerable and marginalized groups, who are disproportionately affected by climate change in European cities.
About us
Methodology for assessing the environmental impact of aquaculture in relation to other sources of impact at a regional scale (MetoMilo)
The complex network of human activities and natural processes affecting coastal areas makes it difficult to manage for blue growth while safeguarding marine environment and ecosystem health. Several different methods are used to assess environmental status, but these cannot identify areas at high risk of high overall impact or identify and assess the contribution of the various sources of impact.

NiD4OCEAN
NiD4OCEAN (Nature-inclusive Designs For Reconciling Offshore Renewables With Ocean Protection) is an EU-funded project that advances the knowledge on nature-inclusive designs and their potential innovative solutions to support both sustainable offshore energy development and biodiversity goals.
CrossGov – Coherent and Cross-Compliant Ocean Governance for Delivering the EU Green Deal
NIVA coordinates this 3-year Horizon Europe-funded project that explores and strengthens policy coherence and institutional integration in coastal and marine governance in Europe.
EcoScope
EcoScope will develop an efficient, holistic, ecosystem-based approach to sustainable fisheries management that can be easily used by stakeholders and end-users, including policymakers and advisory bodies.
