I manage people and projects in applied algae research. We focus on what algae can be used for in everyday life, such as food production. NIVA has had an algae collection since the 1960s, but it has mainly been used for fundamental research.
We study different strains, like spirulina. Which one grows best? Which has the highest protein content? And how can we turn that into products people want? We work closely with industry to understand their needs. For example, how to make algae-based alternatives to sausages, eggs, or fish.
Before joining NIVA, I worked both in the private sector and in academia. In one, the focus was on profit. In the other, mostly on fundamental research. And I always longed for the other. I came to NIVA looking for something in between, and I found the sweet spot.
The world needs more sustainable solutions. We cannot keep living the way we do today. At NIVA, we combine fundamental research, monitoring that can support decision-making, and applied research that leads to real solutions.

Many people are surprised to learn that we have what is essentially a library of algae. Each strain has its own characteristics, kind of like you and me and can serve different purposes, and that is why is so important to keep so many. We have above 2200 strains. We provide around 400 different strains yearly to universities, researchers, and industry. We also explore how algae can be used to test toxicity in the environment, like a canary in a coal mine.
My team is diverse and highly specialized. A bit like an orchestra, where we play together to make great music. That diversity is one of the things that attracted me to NIVA. Even though we work on the same overall topic, we approach it in many different ways.
What I enjoy most is implementation. Seeing your ideas become real. Six years ago, we talked about an algae-based sausage. Now it exists.
In my spare time, I like to read and go second-hand hunting at flea markets. I enjoy the treasure hunt. I also do handicrafts like embroidery and sewing. In a way, I carry the idea of circular thinking with me, both at work and at home.
