Profile

Sunniva has a master's degree in Chemistry and Biotechnology from NMBU in Ås, and wrote a master's thesis on lactic acid bacteria and bacteria-inhibiting substances (antimicrobial peptides). After her studies, she worked for almost six years within the kelp industry in the western region of Norway before she started working at NIVA. She has a lot of experience with the entire value chain of kelp cultivation (sugarkelp, winged kelp and oarweed), and especially the first steps with cultures and seedling production, but also deployment to sea, maintenance, harvesting and processing. This also involves production planning and work with various research projects to develop and improve the production.

Sunniva is a senior engineer at NIVA where she focuses on the cultivation and use of microalgae, contributes to the maintenance of the Norwegian Algae Collection (NORCCA) and works closely with offshore wind and co-existence. She has been involved in several projects and project proposals related to offshore wind, co-existence and microalgae. She led an industry-funded project on the potential coexistence between kelp cultivation and offshore wind, and is currently leading the the NFR-funded project KelpWind where the goal is to identify and close knowledge gaps related to the co-existence of kelp farms and offshore wind.
