Bernhard Askedalen is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of habitats that support endangered species of freshwater plants and algae. In his work at NIVA, he takes part in monitoring the status of aquatic plants and attached algae in Norwegian water bodies, this biodiversity provides index values of ecological condition after the Water Framework Directive. He contributes to NIVA’s work on the implementation of the Nature in Norway system (NiN/Eco-Syst) as a tool for value-neutral conservation of important habitats in Norway.
Bernhard recently graduated from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) with a master’s degree in ecology. Prior to that, he earned a trade certificate as a gardener.
Bernhard is the chair of the Oslo and Akershus Botanical society. He has had the opportunity to gain species identification skills in aquatic plants, charophytes, and mosses through this society since 2017.
